Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.
HIS CHOICE: Angels in America, Part 1 at Vintage Theatre
Vintage Theatre has made the bold decision to mount both parts of this iconic piece of theatre, open them a week apart, and perform them in repertory. This week brings us the opening of part 1 – Millenium Approaches. This Pulitzer and Tony award-winning show serves as a beautiful story of love and relationships, while simultaneously examining how AIDS impacted this country especially on a political level. I’m anxious to see how Vintage Theatre’s very intimate space will aid or hinder the telling of this story.
HER CHOICE: Something Wicked This Way Comes at Aurora Fox Theatre
Grown from Ray Bradbury’s short story of the same name, Something Wicked This Way Comes tells the age-old tale of good and evil. Two rebellious teens get more than they bargained for as “Mr. Dark” and his traveling circus stop in a small Mid-Western town just before Halloween. What perhaps makes this production most interesting is that the Director, Charles Packard, met with Ray Bradbury to not only discuss the story but to go over the ideas for mounting the show. I expect there to be a lot of great ideas built on the shows themes.
