Theatre in the Dark – “The Scottsboro Boys” on Broadway

Here is another Monday installment of Theatre in the Dark — a behind-the-scenes look at a current production to celebrate the day of the week when most professional theaters are not in use, or “dark.”

Today’s Theatre in the Dark explores the use of minstrel show elements, including black actors in blackface, to stage the revival of The Scottsboro Boys from the creator’s perspective. Covering a case where 9 black men are falsely accused of a crime, we found it brilliant that the creators of this production would use such a controversial musical styling to bring the horrific story to life; commenting on the darker parts of our history on multiple levels while entertaining.
