Weekend foreCAST – Gravity Defied, PHAMALY, and Curious

Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.

THEIR CHOICE: [title of show] from Gravity Defied (at Aurora Fox)

Fresh off their terrific production of Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party (critique HERE), Gravity Defied Theatre is bringing us yet another regional premiere with their latest offering, [title of show]. At its simplest, this show is “a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical.” As Joss Whedon once wrote regarding a piece with a similar level of self-reference, “…it’s like breaking the 9th wall.” [title of show] is packed to the brim with comedy for all levels of theatre-goer, from general laugh out loud moments to inside jokes for the savviest of Broadway know-it-alls. Add into the mix the familiar and incredible talent on the stage and this one is sure to be a winner.

NOT TO BE IGNORED: VOX PHAMALIA: TRIAGE at PHAMALY and Astronomical Sunset at Curious Theatre

After the success of last week’s risky world premiere opening of (W)hole at the Paragon Theatre Ensemble (critique HERE), we want to encourage you to go see some of the new works being done right here in Denver!

VOX PHAMALIA: TRIAGE is an original work presented by PHAMALY, who most recently brought us the wonderful production of Beauty and the Beast (critique HERE). This piece continues on the successful works from years past, Tales from the Crips and Redux, which are born from the minds in their writing workshop. According to the website, “this year’s offering is the culmination of a 12 week sketch/Improvisational comedy and dramatic workshop series led by well-known Colorado Director/Playwright Edith Weiss.”

Curious Theatre brings us another world premiere with their production of Astronomical Sunset. According to their website, “Astronomical Sunset is the story of a couple torn apart in a social media scandal. Hidden away in a small town, they attempt to repair their lives, distracted by the appearance of two mysterious strangers who are not who they claim to be. Ripped from the headlines and teeming with unexpected twists and turns, nothing is as it seems in this ever-changing thriller.”
