Weekend foreCAST – Vintage Theatre and DCPA

Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.

HIS CHOICE: Reckless at Denver Center Theatre Company

Most holiday plays we’ll be seeing this season will be sweet, classic, cozy, or sentimental. Reckless, written by Craig Lucas, is none of those things, and takes holiday stories to new heights. After all, how many Christmas stories begin with a husband telling his wife that he’s hired someone to kill her? DCTC’s production promises to never calms down and is sure to be a dark and hilarious twist on a Christmas story.

HER CHOICE: You Can’t Take It With You at Vintage Theatre

This 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning play invites the audience to be part of the zany Sycamore family for the evening. As you prepare for the holidays, if you think your family is a bit nuts, just use the Sycamores as a yard stick for a bit of perspective. However, the audience is quickly laughing with (and not at) the entire family in what is one of the warmest, wackiest plays around.

Not to be Ignored: SHREK THE MUSICAL

When we saw this movie-turned musical on Broadway, we thought it was a fun tribute to both Broadway musicals and the fantastically lovable ogre movie. The tour that arrived in Denver this week is bringing so much soul to this production that we consider it a must-see! With the basic plot structure of the movie and original songs added for the stage, this colorful rendition of Shrek is a wonderful piece of theatre for audience members of all ages. Its moving message of tolerance couldn’t be more welcome in this day and age!
