For the first time in a while, there are hardly any shows opening this weekend. With that in mind, in this week’s edition, we chose to cover some of the offerings that we might have missed in the last few weeks. A LOT of shows, especially with holiday themes, and are winding down, and these are our picks of things you should check out before they close soon.
HIS CHOICE: Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol at The Denver Victorian Playhouse
The Denver Vic has brought back this perspective-taking twist on the familiar A Christmas Carol (usually centered around that humbug, Scrooge). If you like the story but would love to see it from another angle, this adaptation might be for you! Written by Tom Mula, who played Scrooge in over 400 professional performances of A Christmas Carol, we don’t think you’ll find a more delightful take on a familiar story. For those of you outside the Denver area, this play is also being produced by OpenStage in Fort Collins.

HER CHOICE: A Tuna Christmas at Backstage Stage
For those of you who are fans of Greater Tuna, this sequel is a Christmas-themed return to the tiny town of Tuna, Texas. If you’re not familiar with the hilarious and lovable characters in Greater Tuna, you’ll soon latch on to their recognizable behavior around the holiday season, as comedy emerges from the drama of competitive yard displays. Of course, any Christmas show wouldn’t be complete without also commenting on the nature of family this time of year. For those of you outside the Denver area, this play is also being produced at Crested Butte Mountain Theatre.

THIER CHOICE: Inspecting Carol at Spotlight Theatre Company
This Christmas show takes a show-within-a-show look at a group of actors trying to produce A Christmas Carol. The behind-the-scenes bungles of this familiar story are enough to really elevate the comedy, while remaining in contact with the Christmas season. So if you ever wished that for a Noises Off or Waiting for Guffman style play, merged with A Christmas Carol, you have your wish in Inspecting Carol!
