Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.
HIS CHOICE: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Town Hall
Along with performing in the show, I have seen this show half a dozen times including the first national tour and it never gets comepletely old. With real audience members taking part in the spelling bee, the show maintains an element of unpredictability that provides the actors with some improvisational license which keeps the show fresh and funny every night. HER CHOICE: An Evening With Nina at Shadow Theatre
Shadow Theatre is re-mounting its most recent production, An Evening With Nina, for an extended run, Jan 6- 31. This World Premiere celebrates the spirit of the inspiring jazz musician and civil rights icon Nina Simone, and is packed with oodles of her songs. Shadow has had a lot of financial trouble recently, including having to leave their theatre house for other venues. If you are looking to help revitalize this company, this is a good place to start. THEIR CHOICE: Next to Normal at the Denver Center
The fact that this show is one of the few musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize makes it a must see. But this Tony Award winning musical is on its first national tour with the fantastic Alice Ripley, the woman who originated the lead role on Broadway. Exploring some dark themes including a family coping with loss and mental illness, this show is an intense ride and an incredibly moving night at the theatre.
