Weekend foreCAST: Spark, Stories on Stage & The Avenue

Denver, Theatre, Reviews Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.

HIS CHOICE: Dangerous Liaisons by Spark

Denver theater theater He Said She SaidFrom the Spark website: The Marquis de Merteuil has made a little wager with her friend the Vicomte Valmont: seduce her cousin, the young fragile Cecile de Volange who is engaged to Merteuil’s former lover. But the Vicomte has his sights set on a bigger conquest, the pious Tourvel who is known for her virtuousness and impenetrability. Once the wheels of the seduction are in motion, there’s no turning back on this emotional rollercoaster of lust and deception.
Written by a French military strategist, Dangerous Liaisons is glimpse into the mind of two people at war with virtue, with a taste for pleasure regardless of the consequences.

This is the first show for the recently formed Spark Theatre, but they have put together a nice list of names for their cast. We’re looking forward to seeing this new company use some of our local favorites to tackle this engaging and steamy piece of theatre!

HER CHOICE: Crazy in Love by Stories on Stage

Denver theatre theater He Said She SaidFrom the Stories on Stage website:

Love is the engine that keeps every man and woman around the world, be they young or old, black or white, gay or straight, dogs or cats, completely, hopelessly, stupidly, ga-ga over the particular object of their affection. Love makes us all crazy. Let Love Rule.

Sundered Hearts by P.G. Wodehouse, read by Jamie Horton
Magic Words by Jill McCorkle, read by Tamlyn Tomita
Wintering by Anastasia Kolendo, read by Karen Slack

Haven’t heard of or seen a Stories on Stage show before? Check out a couple of our critiques (HERE and HERE). We’ve always been blown away by the simplicity and the elegance of well-told stories by Stories on Stage. We hope Crazy in Love will be a crazy good time.

NOT TO BE MISSED: Hedwig and the Angry Inch by The Avenue

From the Avenue website: The Obie Award-winning Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a vibrant story of an East German glam-rocker who comes to America hoping to find freedom and fortune. However, to leave East Germany, Hedwig hadto leave a little “something” behind. The evening is an intoxicating concert with Hedwig and the band “TheAngry Inch.” In the tradition of The Rocky Horror Show, mixed with Iggy Pop and David Bowie, you are sure to be laughing while Hedwig’s stories and music have your head spinning and heart pounding!

We missed this production last summer, and from what we hear, audiences will flocking to see this remounted, rockin’ production for the first, second, third… who knows how many times!
