2011 Tony Awards Nominations List

Earlier in the morning on May 3rd, former Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose and Matthew Broderick  announced the 2011 Tony Nominations at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The biggest number of nods, 14, were given to the Book of Mormon, Broadway’s biggest critical hit since The Producers starring the aforementioned Broderick. The managed to score not one but two lead actor nominations for Josh Gad and Andrew Rannels as the main two Mormon missionaries in the show. The close second, in terms of largest number of nominations, went to The Scotsboro Boys – a bit of a surprise given that the show is not only currently closed but it also closed rather quickly due to low ticket sales and controversy.

A few nominations we were particularly glad to see was that of Bobby Cannavale, nominated for Lead Actor in a Play for his role in The Motherfu**er with the Hat, and Arian Moayed whose turn in The Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo earned him a nod for Featured Actor in a Play. Both shared the stage with mega-star celebrities, Chris Rock and Robin Williams, who potentially could have overshadowed their brilliant performances. To the contrary, neither Rock nor Williams received a nomination. In what is perhaps seen as one the largest “snubs”, Daniel Radcliffe was not nominated for his take in the latest revival of How to Succeed…, which was last revived starring (again) the aforementioned Broderick. His show, however, garnered 8 noms including Featured Actor for John Laraquette and Best Director and Choreographer, both to Rob Ashford. Interestingly enough, the Director/Choreographer noms are almost identical. The same four shows were nominated and three of the four had the same person fulfilling both roles. The only difference was with Book of Mormon.
