Weekend foreCAST- Evolution, Paragon & Gravity Defied

Denver, Theatre, Reviews Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. These could be the best shows of the year or these shows could end up being terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.

HIS CHOICE: Breach by Evolution Theatre Company

From Evolution TC: Joanne Donetti is a singer-songwriter from Long Island who performs what she feels and does as she pleases, needing no more recognition than a few free drinks at the end of her wait shift.  That is until Lou Valentino, New York record exec and all-around go-getter, happens into her bar on an uneventful evening of scouting and catches her closing number.  Lou’s interest in Joanne is her dream come true, but is his adoration for the woman he discovered or the star he wants to create?

This is one of the most talked-about productions of 2011. It’s so  full of local favorites, how could it not be near the top of our list?

HER CHOICE: The Pride at Paragon

From the Paragon website: Oliver, Philip, and Sylvia are caught up in a potent love triangle that spans decades of time. Jumping from 1958 London to the present and back again, The Pride drives the threesome up against social and personal assumptions about sexuality and friendship. As loyalties are questioned and passions revealed, each of them discovers what it means to be proud of who they are.

We’re not only excited about this dramatic gem that is being performed by one of our favorite companies in time, but HE is also featured in this production! See our interview with the director and several cast members to learn more about the play.

THEIR CHOICE: The Last 5 Years by Gravity Defied

The Last Five Years, Gravity Defied, Denver, Theatre, TheaterFrom wikipedia: The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

This show is a personal favorite of ours (it really is a He Said/She Said musical!) and as we expressed in our preview piece, we’re very excited about this production!

  1. Something that is missing from this list is Performance Now Theater Company’s “Music Man” at Lakewood Cultural Center… Amazing talent and energy! (Fridays 7:30 pm, Saturdays 2 and 7:30 pm, and Sundays 2 pm through May 15th)
