One of Tennessee Williams most poignant looks at the human need for connectedness…even when we know it’s not good for us. The Night of the Iguana won Williams his fourth New York Drama Critics Award. The story pits two women in direct competition with each other, both looking to replace what they recently lost or anticipate losing very soon…a purpose…someone to take care of.
A tough, sex-starved widow who runs the hotel; the broken down, defrocked minister, and the gentle maiden (dragon) lady are all thrown together on the veranda of a Bohemian hotel on the hill over Caleta in Puerto Barrio, Mexico. Three desperate souls seeking to satisfy their human needs look to each other for fulfillment. We realize ultimately that the human spirit will somehow survive in spite of our three saboteurs. There is a strong and immediate rapport between the discredited cleric and the lonely artist which creates a dynamic competition between the two women. The play’s most poignant moments grow out of our understanding these people, their mutual need for companionship and their final efforts to hold onto their nobility and honor.
We are left to hope for freedom for the Iguana.
