Paragon’s “The Real Thing” is Theatre at Its Best

The Real Thing presented by Paragon Theatre Ensemble presents one of Tom Stoppard’s best plays. This play is typical Stoppard complete with witty wordplay that flies past you before you can comprehend half of it. This play, however, offers a brainy and heartfelt view of the cynical and sweet parts of love, lust, fidelity and marriage. The play centers on a central couple, requiring a few of their exes, offspring and lovers to fully tell their story.

Weekend foreCAST – Our Picks for This Weekend

Of the shows opening this weekend, these are the ones we want to see. We might agree entirely. We might disagree completely. These shows could end up being great or terrible. As always we encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on our list and what shows you are seeing this weekend.

HIS PICKS:

TICKETS/INFO

1)Our Town – Colorado Shakespeare Festival
The next installment of their “American Classic” series, Our Town is the most produced play in American history. It is truly a timeless and universal piece with and incredible touching and heart-wrenching ending. This play drew me into theatre, so I hope they do well by it.

2)Beauty and the Beast –PHAMALy
From the movies to Broadway, one of Disney’s greatest hits is now in the hands of the Physically Handicapped Actors & Musical Artists League, the country’s best handicapped theatre company.

3) Urinetown – Evergreen Players
A hit on Broadway, even the worst productions of this I have seen have been funny because the material is simply hysterical.

HER PICKS:

1) Our Town – Colorado Shakespeare Festival
I actually have never seen this show (which is so statistically unlikely!) so I am looking forward to it a lot. CSF has some strong actors, so I imagine they will do a brilliant job with the play for my first time seeing it.

2) The Real Thing – Paragon Theatre Ensemble
The romantic in me loves Tom Stoppard for Shakespeare in Love. The intellectual in me loves him for Arcadia. And the audience member in me loves Paragon for bringing Stoppard’s The Real Thing to production in Denver.

TICKETS/INFO

3) All Shook Up – Arvada Center
So this one actually opened on the 13th, but this is the first weekend it will be showing, so I think it still counts. Although a musicalized Twelfth Night might not beg for an Elvis score, the two are a pleasing pair in this production, which promises to be pure fun. With the simplicity of the ’50s and the satisfaction of a Shakespearean comedic plot, I bet I’ll be coming out of this one smiling (and humming!).
